Discovering the Urban Brandy Cocktail Route

The SA Brandy Foundation has recently introduced a new initiative aimed at urban brandy and cocktail lovers. The Urban Brandy Cocktail Route launched earlier this year and initially was only meant to be held at two venues.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the 3rd event for the year, held at Jackal & Hide in Kloof Street, Cape Town. My wife, as most ladies do, loves cocktails, so it felt right that she joined me for the occasion. With fireplaces and plush couches, this was the perfect venue to kick back, relax and enjoy some of S.A’s finest brandy cocktails.

On arrival we were greeted by the team, and kicked off proceedings with an Oude Meester Franklin, a combination of Oude Meester Demant , bitters and ginger ale, or as we like to call it, the classic Brandy & Ginger!

The menu included a mouth-watering selection of eight hand-crafted (and by that I mean properly prepared) brandy cocktails and the favourites for the night seemed to be The Collison’s Cosmo & Fish Eagle Rio, which are brandy twists on the classic Cosmopolitan and Caipirinha. Naturally, the low-calorie Skinny (KWV5, Mint leaves, Naartfjies and diet sprite) was also a hit amongst the ladies.

I also managed to catch up with Christelle Reade-Jahn, head of the SA Brandy Foundation, who has been overwhelmed by the success of the campaign and decided to extend it to a further 8 venues throughout Cape Town including Shimmy’s Beach Bar and the exclusive One & Only Hotel.

The Urban Brandy Cocktail route is a great way to wind down your day, and appreciate the route less traveled – that of brandy cocktails.
